Galeruca tanaceti is a shiny black beetle with dimpled elytra. Elytra is wider at hind end, especially in the female, where abdomen may protrude beyond the elytra. The elytra has a thick edge, legs are long and black. Galeruca tanaceti reaches the length of 6 to 10mm. The females are longer than males.
This beetle can be found in whole Europe and Asia and even in North Africa. It has also been imported into Northern America. It has a strong preference for warm dry grassy area.
Adults can be mainly found between June and August but also until October. Eggs are laid during September or October. At the time of oviposition the abdomen is greatly enlarged and filled with eggs so much that the elytra cover just one half of the length of the belly. The photos here depict a female filled with eggs.
These beetles are widespread and can be a pest to crops.
